ORIENTATION

Last Saturday, my family and I went to the Natural History Museum in the city. We decided to go because we had been learning about dinosaurs at school and we wanted to see real fossils.

SEQUENCE OF EVENTS

First, we arrived at the museum early in the morning and bought our tickets. Then, we walked into the main hall and saw an enormous T-Rex skeleton standing right in the middle of the room. I could not believe how big it was! After that, my mum took us to the fossils exhibit, where we saw shells and fish that were millions of years old. Next, we watched a short film about how dinosaurs lived and what they ate. We also visited the gift shop, where I bought a small dinosaur model to take home.

REFLECTION

Finally, we had lunch in the museum cafe and headed home. I felt very excited and curious about science. I learned that dinosaurs were much more varied than I had thought, and that fossils can tell us so much about life millions of years ago. It was one of the best days of the year!

Orientation = sets the scene Sequence = events in order Reflection = feelings + learning
📝A recount is different from a story: it is about real events that actually happened. Like a diary entry, a biography, or a journal!

3Enclose in quotation marks " " — introduced with a colon :Write: "In warm parts of the world, in all habitats."
Practice Text: Snakes

Subphylum: Vertebrata  |  Class: Reptilia  |  Number of species: Over 2,000

Distribution: Snakes live in warm parts of the world, including the sea, in all habitats. They are found on every continent except Antarctica.

Prey: A snake can track its prey using its long, forked tongue, which it flicks over the ground. It picks up the smell left by small animals like mice and voles. Some snakes, such as grass snakes, catch their prey by grabbing and swallowing it whole. Others, such as pythons, coil their bodies around their prey and squeeze it, making it impossible for the animal to breathe.

Attack: Poisonous snakes attack their prey with their fangs. The poison glands are in the snake's jaw and, as they bite their prey, the poison is injected into its nervous system. Only a third of all the snakes in the world are poisonous.

The black mamba is the fastest snake. It can travel around 15km/hour in short bursts.

Examples of questions and text evidence:

Q: Where do snakes live? Evidence: "In warm parts of the world, including the sea, in all habitats."
Q: How does a snake track its prey? Evidence: "using its long, forked tongue, which it flicks over the ground"
Q: How do poisonous snakes attack? Evidence: "poisonous snakes attack their prey with their fangs"
